Fact Check: Girl students harassed by boys in India? No, video from Bangladesh goes viral

Hyderabad: A video circulating on social media claims to show two girl students being harassed in India. The short viral clip shows two girls in school uniforms crossing a small bridge when a boy kicks them twice.

Those sharing the video claim it shows the atrocities against women under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the country. NewsMeter found that the claim is false.

What Happened

A video from Bangladesh was falsely shared as showing atrocities against women in India. We conducted a reverse image search and found that the Bangladeshi media outlet Ekushey Television-ETV published a detailed video report on YouTube on August 10.

• The school issued a transfer certificate (TC) to the victim.

• The accused boy then kicked the Class 4 student twice from behind.

• The students, who were in Class 4 and Class 7, went for a walk near the walkway along the Shitalakshya River in Ward No.

The report stated that the incident happened in Narayanganj. The two minor students were returning from school when the boy harassed them and kicked them.

• Bangladeshi media organisation Prothom Alo also reported the incident on August 7 under the title, ‘Video of schoolgirl being kicked goes viral, school issues TC to victim’.

• No written complaint was filed, so he was placed under the supervision of the social services department and his parents.

The video went viral, following which an apology video of the accused was released.

• Police detained the boy, who is also a minor.
