The recovery was made on Sunday in the Gopalganj, where officers had gone to verify photographs allegedly showing a man posing with a pistol on social media. As part of the investigation, a police team reached the residence of Saurabh Ahirwar to search for.
While no firearm was immediately recovered, officers found a locked cupboard during the search. Police said the family did not have the key to the cupboard.
What Happened
It was subsequently opened in the presence of witnesses following due procedure. Inside, officers found four bags stuffed with bundles of currency notes.
Officials said the seized cash would be handed over to the appropriate authorities, while agencies such as the Income Tax Department may also be informed as part of the investigation.
Senior police officers also reached the spot during the operation and questioned family members.
Investigators are examining whether there are any bank records, financial documents or other evidence to explain the origin of the money and why such a large amount was stored at the house.
Key Details
The amount of cash was so large that police had to call for an electronic currency-counting machine to complete the counting process.
Police, however, said the family's claim was being verified and that the ownership and source of the cash had not yet been established.
According to the family, Ramesh Ahirwar lives in the Chunabhatti area of Bhopal and works as an engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD).
They told police that the money belonged to their relative, Ramesh Ahirwar, who had allegedly kept it at the house around eight to nine months ago.
Why It Matters
During questioning, family members claimed that the cash did not belong to them.
The exercise, which began in the afternoon, continued until around midnight and was videographed to document the recovery.
